When comparing bowling balls it is often difficult to describe which ball is "stronger" or "hooks more", purely because bowling balls are designed for different "purposes" on different lane conditions. On one oil pattern, a sanded "hook monster" may outhook your strong pearl by 10 boards because the pearl never gets a chance to grip the lane, while on a lighter pattern the sanded ball will burn up earlier and appear to hook less than your pearl.
So, to allow us to better describe the "strength" of a ball when used on the appropriate condition and in comparison with other balls, we have developed a "Power Rating" for all Seismic balls, new and old, to give you a little more insight!
How are Power Ratings calculated?
Very simply, each Seismic ball is rated between zero and 100 for four different categories. The "length" it will get on an average condition, the potential strength of the ball in the midlane, the friction created by the ball's cover in oil, and the friction created by the ball's cover in the dry. These numbers are then added to give a total score, and generate the Power Rating.
With four categories, the maximum score possible would be 400, however in practise this would not be achievable - for this we would need to test a ball that "rolls at your feet", achieves the ultimate amount of tourque in the midlane, grips the lane in heavy oil like a sanded particle ball, AND grip the dry like an agressive pearl. In reality, this isnt possible, so there will be no "increasing the max" with the Seismic Power Rating!
Power Ratings of Current Seismic Balls
Raging Bull- 300 - Early, strong overall, and smooth on the back end for very heavy oil patterns.
Venator - 285 - Clears the heads but is very strong in the midlane and backend.
Raging Bull Stampede - 260 - Medium length, strong in the midlane and stronger than most sanded balls on the back end.
Dominion - 240 - Early to medium length, medium midlane strength, agressive in oil and strong on the back end.
Aftermath Pearl - 225 - Medium in length, midlane strength and oil handling capacity, medium to strong on the back end.
Solaris Platinum - 180 - Great length, skips through oil and the midlane, strong on the back end.
While Power Ratings cannot give definitive answer to "which is stronger" it will allow you to compare balls more accurately before testing, and when read in conjunction with the ball definitions describing their reaction, will give you all the ammunition you need to build a complimentary arsenal.
We would love to hear feedback from bowlers with Seismic balls and how YOU would rate each of our balls, especially if you have several balls.
